According to the announcement sent to members by the Service Exporters’ Association, the European Commission has published a comprehensive guidance document in preparation for the simplified EU Taxonomy reporting rules to be implemented as of January 2026. This guidance aims to make companies’ reporting processes more understandable and applicable within the framework of the EU Taxonomy, which regulates the classification of sustainable economic activities in the EU.
The guidance document supports the significant simplifications introduced by the Taxonomy Omnibus Package adopted in July 2025. The package removed the requirement for companies to report intangible activities, simplified key performance indicators (KPIs) for financial institutions, and reduced data points in reporting templates by 89% for financial institutions and 66% for non-financial institutions. This is expected to significantly ease the bureaucratic burden on companies operating in the EU.
The guidance document answers common questions posed by companies subject to reporting obligations under the Taxonomy, the Sustainable Finance Platform and national/EU-level supervisory authorities. It also provides early, practical and interpretative guidance on how to implement the simplified rules. The main objective of the guidance is to help stakeholders properly prepare the first simplified Taxonomy reporting for the 2025 financial year, which will be published in 2026. This is an important part of the EU’s long-term strategy to strengthen the sustainable investment ecosystem and increase transparency in reporting processes. The guidance document is expected to clarify implementation steps and facilitate the compliance process, especially for financial institutions and export-oriented companies.
