EU Regulation on Disposal of Unsold Products

The European Commission has launched a public consultation on possible exceptions to the regulation banning the disposal of unsold clothes and shoes. These exceptions cover health, hygiene, irreparable damage or lack of space for donation. The aim is to reduce waste and strengthen the circular economy by promoting sustainable product design.
EU to Destruction of Unsold Products

The European Commission has launched a public consultation to identify possible exemptions to the June 30, 2025 ban on the disposal of unsold clothing and footwear. The initiative is part of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, which aims to promote sustainable product design. The consultation identifies exemptions that would allow unsold products to be disposed of only under certain circumstances. These include health and safety reasons, hygiene concerns, if the product is irreparably damaged, if it cannot be used for technical or legal reasons, or if there is no suitable place to donate it. The consultation period will continue until August 11, 2025.

This new step is considered as part of the European Union’s goal to make the fashion industry more sustainable and circular. With the regulation that came into force last year, features such as durability, repairability and recyclability of products have now become a legal obligation. Large companies were also required to disclose the amount of unsold products they dispose of and the reasons why. The consultation process launched in this context aims to provide clarity on how the ban will be implemented in practice and provide guidance to the industry. This step is crucial to optimize resource use by reducing waste generation and supporting the circular economy.
