The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and CENELEC have published an update on the latest EN standards relevant to various sectors and the deadlines for the removal of conflicting national standards. The updates cover a wide range of topics, from surface coating test methods to leather and textile testing, from fabric resilience measurements to the classification of carpets and floor coverings. The repeal dates for all these standards range from May 31, 2026 to June 30, 2026, with many older standards being replaced by revised versions in line with new technical requirements. These changes require both manufacturers and laboratories to comply with up-to-date test methods.
However, the European Commission continues to strengthen its sustainability policies for the textile sector. On December 19, 2025, the Commission published a new initiative entitled “Eco-design Requirements for Sustainable and Circular Clothing Textiles”. This initiative aims to reduce the environmental impact of textiles, promote the design of longer-lasting and recyclable textiles and facilitate access to sustainability information. The regulation is planned to be formally adopted by the Commission in the first quarter of 2027.
These developments herald stricter compliance requirements for both manufacturers and importers in Europe in the coming period. It is critical that all businesses producing or marketing textile and leather products closely follow both the updated EN standards and the upcoming EU sustainability regulations.
