Tear Strength Tests

The durability of the outsoles of footwear is critical to its ability to perform, especially in harsh conditions. Our laboratory offers testing services to evaluate the tear strength of shoe outsoles in accordance with TS EN 12771:2001. These tests ensure that your products meet international standards for quality and durability.

Definition and Importance of the Test

Tear strength is the resistance of a material to tearing. For shoe outsoles, this property is extremely important for the longevity and durability of the product. Tear strength tests are conducted to measure the durability of the material and to determine how well the product will perform in harsh conditions.

Test Procedure

The tear strength test is performed on rectangular cut specimens. The specimens are conditioned for 24 hours at 23±2°C and 50±5% relative humidity. After conditioning, the specimens are placed in a tensile-compression testing machine. The device applies a tensile force to the specimen at a given speed (100 ± 10 mm/min) and the force applied during the tearing process is recorded. At the end of the test, the tear strength (TS) of the specimen is calculated and reported in N/mm.

Safety and Quality Control

In our laboratory, all necessary safety precautions are taken to perform tests safely. Personnel perform tests using protective equipment. Quality control processes are carried out according to the “Analysis Internal Quality Control Practices Guide” and the accuracy of the results is meticulously ensured.

Reporting of Test Results

Evaluation of Results

The test results are reported as tear strength (TS) values. These values are expressed in N/mm according to the thickness of the specimen and are calculated as the average of the results from three different specimens. The report details the standards used, a full description of the specimen, the test method and any deviations.

Application Areas

Tear strength testing is critical for footwear manufacturers, material suppliers and quality control professionals. These tests increase the durability and reliability of your products, giving you a competitive advantage in the market.
